Where Crohn's disease pain may be felt

The end of the small intestine lies in the lower right abdomen, while the large intestine curves around much of the abdomen. Inflammation in these areas can produce cramps, tenderness, urgency, or diarrhoea. Pain can also be felt more generally when the bowel is distended by gas or stool. The same area may not hurt every time, and the location alone cannot identify Crohn's disease.

Pain that moves, becomes constant, or changes with meals and bowel movements is worth describing accurately. Other abdominal conditions can feel similar, so assessment matters.

Use a simple body outline or note to mark the pain, then record whether it is central, right-sided, left-sided, upper, or lower. Add timing, severity, bowel changes, vomiting, fever, and whether movement or food affects it. Arrange a GP consultation for repeated or unexplained pain. A clinician may examine the abdomen and arrange a blood test or other tests.

Seek urgent help if pain is sudden and severe, steadily worsening, associated with a swollen or rigid abdomen, or accompanied by repeated vomiting, faintness, fever with severe weakness, or inability to pass stool or gas. Blood in the stool also needs prompt medical advice.

Ask whether the location fits the bowel area being investigated, what other causes should be considered, which tests can clarify the picture, and which change in pain requires urgent review.
