Crohn's disease and mouth sores

Crohn's-related mouth sores may look like shallow ulcers on the inside of the lips, cheeks, or gums. They can make eating, brushing, or speaking uncomfortable. They may appear during a period when bowel symptoms are active, but a sore can also have a separate explanation such as irritation, infection, or a nutritional problem.

Tell a clinician about diarrhoea, abdominal pain, reduced appetite, weight change, or tiredness alongside the sores. The pattern of symptoms and an examination are more useful than the appearance of one sore alone.

Choose soft, cool foods if chewing hurts, drink enough fluid, and avoid tobacco, alcohol-based mouthwash, and foods that clearly irritate the sore. Use a soft toothbrush and do not pick at the area. A GP consultation can check the mouth, review medicines and diet, and decide whether a blood test or another assessment is needed.

Arrange an appointment if a sore lasts beyond a short period, keeps returning, or makes eating and drinking difficult. Seek urgent help if swelling affects breathing or swallowing, if you cannot maintain fluids, or if severe weakness accompanies diarrhoea or vomiting.

Ask whether the sore could be linked to bowel inflammation, whether your medicines or nutrition need review, what treatment is suitable for the mouth, and which changes require urgent attention.
