What should you know about Crohn's disease IV treatment?

An intravenous line gives a healthcare team access to a vein. It can be used for rehydration when diarrhoea or vomiting has reduced fluid intake, for medicines that need supervised delivery, or for treatment during a hospital assessment. The choice depends on the affected bowel area, inflammation, your general health, and whether you can take treatment by mouth.

IV treatment does not describe one single Crohn's disease medicine. Some people receive it briefly while clinicians address dehydration or a flare; others may need a planned infusion medicine with observation before and after the dose. The team may check symptoms, examination findings, and blood results while deciding whether treatment is helping.

Write down your bowel pattern, abdominal pain, fever, medicines, allergies, and any recent weight or appetite change. Tell the clinician about previous infusion reactions, infections, pregnancy, or medicines that affect immunity. Drink only as advised if a procedure or sedation is planned, and do not stop prescribed treatment without guidance.

During an infusion, report itching, rash, chest tightness, dizziness, worsening pain, or feeling faint promptly. Afterward, follow the supplied plan for medicines, fluids, food, and follow-up. Seek urgent medical care for severe or rapidly worsening abdominal pain, a swollen abdomen with repeated vomiting, inability to keep fluids down, fainting, confusion, or heavy rectal bleeding. During or after an infusion, emergency help is needed for trouble breathing, facial swelling, or collapse. New or persistent diarrhoea with marked weakness also warrants prompt assessment.
