Crohn's disease inflammation: symptoms and assessment

Inflammation may occur in patches and can involve deeper layers of the bowel wall. This can lead to cramping, loose stools, urgency, reduced appetite or reduced absorption of nutrients. Some people have active inflammation with modest symptoms, while others feel unwell with a wider symptom burden; symptoms alone do not measure the full picture.

Crohn's Disease can affect different digestive regions, so the location and pattern matter when a clinician interprets symptoms and test results. Abdominal Pain and Diarrhoea are related symptoms with many possible causes.

Arrange a GP Consultation when bowel symptoms persist, return frequently, disturb sleep, or come with fatigue, weight change or blood in the stool. Note timing, stool appearance, pain, appetite, medicines and any fever before the visit.

A Blood Test may look for signs that support inflammation, anaemia or nutritional problems. It is one part of assessment, not a stand-alone diagnosis. Follow the treatment plan provided and discuss side effects before making changes.

Get urgent medical help for severe or worsening pain, repeated vomiting, a distended abdomen, heavy rectal bleeding, fainting, dehydration, high fever or sudden marked weakness. These may signal a complication or another illness requiring prompt review.

Ask where inflammation may be located, how improvement will be monitored, what symptoms suggest a complication, and which test results should lead to an earlier review.
