Can Crohn's disease be deadly?

Crohn's disease causes inflammation in parts of the digestive tract. Many people manage it with medical treatment and monitoring, but active disease can lead to dehydration, significant bleeding, a bowel blockage, a deep infection, or poor nutrition. The level of risk depends on the pattern and severity of inflammation, previous complications, medicines, and overall health.

Abdominal pain, diarrhoea, fatigue, reduced appetite, or weight change can reflect active disease, but they can also have other causes. A symptom does not by itself show that a life-threatening complication is present.

Arrange a GP Consultation if symptoms are new, persistent, or returning after a quiet period. Bring a list of medicines and describe stool changes, pain location, fever, eating and drinking, and any bleeding. A Blood Test may help assess inflammation, anaemia, or effects of poor absorption; your clinician will decide whether further evaluation is needed.

If Crohn's disease is already diagnosed, take prescribed treatment as directed and do not stop it suddenly without medical advice. Keep follow-up appointments even when symptoms settle, because inflammation can sometimes continue with few symptoms.

Get urgent help for severe abdominal pain, a rigid or markedly swollen abdomen, repeated vomiting, heavy bleeding, black stools, fainting, confusion, high fever, or inability to drink. A flare with rapidly worsening symptoms also needs prompt review. These signs can indicate dehydration, obstruction, severe inflammation, or infection.

Ask what complications you should watch for, how your treatment will be monitored, which symptoms require same-day help, and whether your current symptoms need a Blood Test or other assessment.
