Crohn's disease and chest pain: what to know

Chest discomfort can come from reflux, irritation of the food pipe, muscle strain, anxiety, or a respiratory problem. Crohn's disease can affect areas beyond the intestines, and inflammation or treatment-related effects may occasionally be relevant, but chest pain has many possible explanations.

The character of the pain matters: note whether it is burning, sharp, pressure-like, worse with breathing or movement, related to meals, or accompanied by palpitations. Chest pain should not be explained away as Crohn's disease without an assessment.

Stop strenuous activity and note when the pain began, where it is, how long it lasts, and what makes it better or worse. Arrange a GP consultation for new, recurring, or unexplained pain, especially if you also have abdominal pain, diarrhoea, fever, or a recent medicine change.

Do not take someone else's heart or anti-inflammatory medicine. A clinician may examine your chest and abdomen, review your medicines, and decide whether tests such as a blood test are appropriate.

Call emergency services for heavy or squeezing chest pressure, pain spreading to the arm, jaw, back, or shoulder, severe breathlessness, fainting, sudden weakness, or sweating with nausea. Seek prompt medical advice for pain that is severe, persistent, or worsening, even when bowel symptoms seem mild.
