Is Crohn's disease autoimmune?

Crohn's disease is an inflammatory bowel disease. The immune system contributes to inflammation in the bowel, but the condition is not explained by a single immune marker or one simple trigger. Genes, the gut environment and other factors can influence risk and activity. Abdominal pain and diarrhoea may occur with Crohn's disease, yet either symptom can have several possible causes.

The term autoimmune is sometimes used in everyday conversation, while clinicians may focus more precisely on inflammatory bowel disease and the pattern found in your assessment.

Discuss persistent or recurring symptoms with a GP. Assessment may include your history, examination, blood test and other investigations chosen for your situation. Treatment is aimed at calming bowel inflammation, managing symptoms and supporting nutrition and hydration. Do not change prescribed immune-targeting medicine because of a label you read online; ask what the medicine is for and how it should be monitored.

Arrange prompt care for ongoing diarrhoea, worsening abdominal pain, fever, blood in the stool or difficulty maintaining fluids. Seek urgent help for severe pain, repeated vomiting, a swollen abdomen, faintness, heavy bleeding or confusion. These features can signal a complication or another urgent illness and need direct assessment.
