What should you know about Crohn's disease and hemorrhoids?

Hemorrhoids are swollen blood vessels around the anus or lower rectum. Frequent diarrhoea, repeated wiping, constipation, or straining can irritate this area. Crohn's disease can also cause inflammation, fissures, fistulas, or bleeding from higher in the digestive tract. Bright red blood on toilet paper may come from hemorrhoids, but its appearance alone cannot confirm the source.

Pain, urgency, mucus, abdominal pain, and ongoing diarrhoea may point to bowel inflammation rather than hemorrhoids alone. A person can have both conditions, so it is safer to describe every symptom rather than assume bleeding is harmless.

Arrange a GP Consultation or speak with your Crohn's care team about new bleeding, anal pain, a lump, discharge, or a change in bowel pattern. Keep stools soft through the eating and fluid plan recommended for you, avoid straining, and clean gently after bowel movements. Ask before using suppositories, creams, or anti-inflammatory pain medicines because some products may irritate inflamed tissue or conflict with your treatment.

Seek urgent help for heavy or ongoing bleeding, black stools, dizziness, fainting, severe anal or abdominal pain, fever, or rapidly increasing swelling. Urgent review is also needed if you cannot pass stool or gas, or if vomiting accompanies abdominal swelling.

Ask where the bleeding is most likely coming from, whether an examination or blood test is needed, which local treatments are suitable, and how to tell hemorrhoid symptoms from a Crohn's flare or another complication.
