Crohn's disease and acid reflux

Acid reflux may feel like burning behind the breastbone, a sour taste, regurgitation, throat irritation, or a cough after eating or lying down. Crohn's disease affects the digestive tract and may bring abdominal pain, diarrhoea, reduced appetite, or nausea. These symptoms can overlap with medicine effects, indigestion, or another digestive problem, so reflux alone does not show that Crohn's disease is active.

A clinician may ask when symptoms occur, whether swallowing is difficult, and which medicines or foods seem to trigger them. Keeping a brief symptom and meal record can make that conversation clearer.

Try smaller meals, remain upright after eating, and avoid lying down soon after food. Notice whether late meals, spicy or fatty foods, coffee, or alcohol worsen symptoms, then discuss patterns rather than removing many foods at once. Take Crohn's medicines as prescribed and check before starting an over-the-counter reflux treatment, because some products may not suit your bowel condition or other medicines.

Arrange a GP Consultation if reflux keeps returning, interrupts sleep, or is difficult to manage. A Blood Test may be considered when the wider Crohn's picture needs checking, although reflux itself is not diagnosed by a blood test.

Seek urgent medical help for severe chest pain, vomiting blood, black stools, fainting, or sudden trouble swallowing. Contact your clinician promptly if food seems to stick, vomiting persists, you cannot keep fluids down, or reflux occurs with worsening abdominal pain or diarrhoea. These features need assessment because they can signal a problem beyond ordinary reflux.

Ask whether your symptoms fit reflux or another digestive problem, whether any current Crohn's medicine could contribute, and which treatment is suitable with your health history. You can also ask whether you need review of your Crohn's disease or further testing.
