Cradle cap on the hairline: what parents should know

Cradle cap, also known as infantile seborrheic dermatitis, often involves the scalp and can extend onto the forehead at the hairline. The edge may show loose white flakes, yellowish scale, or a thin greasy layer. Mild redness can sit beneath the scale. Hair may make the border harder to see, and rubbing a hat or headband can add irritation. This appearance alone does not show that the scalp is infected; pain, warmth, swelling, pus, or rapid spread are more concerning features.

During bathing, wet the hairline with lukewarm water and use a mild fragrance-free cleanser. Massage with fingertips, not nails, then rinse and pat dry.
