What to know about cradle cap near the eyes

Scale may sit on the eyebrows, at the inner or outer corner, or along the edge of an eyelid. The skin can look dry, greasy, or mildly red. Cradle cap itself should not cause eye pain or change how your baby sees. Redness inside the eye, discharge, pronounced swelling, light sensitivity, or difficulty opening the eye may signal a separate eye or skin problem. Because the area is delicate, appearance alone cannot confirm the diagnosis.

Use clean hands and a soft, damp cloth to wipe away loose flakes from the surrounding skin; do not scrape the eyelid or pull crusts from the lashes. Keep shampoo, oils, emollients, and medicated creams out of the eye unless a clinician has given precise instructions. If scale needs softening, ask a clinician which emollient is suitable and exactly where it can go. A clinician may consider topical antifungal treatment for selected cases, but medicine should not be borrowed or applied close to the eye without guidance.

Seek prompt medical advice if the eyelid becomes very swollen, the eye is red, there is sticky discharge, the baby keeps rubbing it, or the eye remains closed. Get urgent help for a sudden change in vision, severe pain, marked light sensitivity, or a baby who seems unwell. Also arrange a review when the rash spreads or fails to improve with gentle care.
