How to treat cradle cap in newborns

Cradle cap, also called infantile seborrheic dermatitis, causes greasy or dry flakes and patches on the scalp. It is not caused by poor hygiene and often does not bother the baby. Scales may extend to the eyebrows or behind the ears. The skin can look yellow, white, pink, or mildly red, depending on the baby's skin tone.

Before a bath, apply a thin layer of plain, fragrance-free emollient to the scaly area and leave it briefly to loosen the flakes. Massage very lightly with fingertips, then use a soft baby brush only if scales lift easily. Wash thoroughly with mild baby shampoo so residue does not remain. Repeat gently rather than trying to clear every scale in one session. Avoid adult dandruff products, essential oils, and scratching.

Contact a clinician if the scalp is raw, bleeding, swollen, warm, painful, or producing fluid or crust. Seek prompt advice if the baby has a fever, seems unwell, feeds poorly, or the rash spreads beyond the scalp. A clinician can check whether another skin condition or infection is present and decide whether treatment such as an emollient or topical antifungal is appropriate.
