How to get rid of cradle cap

Cradle cap, also called infantile seborrheic dermatitis, causes greasy or dry yellow-white scales on a baby's scalp. It may look stubborn but is usually not caused by poor hygiene and often does not bother the baby. Scaling can extend to the hairline, eyebrows or behind the ears.

Before washing, place a small amount of plain emollient on the affected scalp and leave it briefly to soften the scale. Use a soft baby brush or washcloth to loosen flakes that are already lifting, then shampoo with a mild product and rinse well. Do not pick, scrape, or pull attached crusts, because this can irritate the skin and introduce infection. A clinician may suggest an appropriate medicated option, such as topical antifungal treatment, when ordinary care does not settle the scaling.

Arrange medical advice if the scalp is very red, swollen, warm, bleeding, painful, oozing, or developing a bad smell. Seek advice if the rash spreads widely, affects the eyes, or the baby seems unwell. A clinician can check whether another skin condition is causing the crusting and choose treatment suited to the baby's age.

Ask whether the appearance fits cradle cap, which cleanser or emollient is suitable, and whether a medicated product is needed. Tell the clinician where the rash has spread, whether the baby scratches, and what you have already applied.
