Cradle cap and hair loss: what to know

Cradle cap affects the outer scalp and commonly causes attached flakes. Hair may appear thinner where scale is lifted, or normal infant shedding may happen at the same time. Cradle cap itself does not usually damage the hair root. Smooth bald patches, broken hairs, ring-shaped scale, inflamed skin, or loss of eyebrows suggest a different condition and should be examined.

Wash with a mild fragrance-free shampoo and soften attached scale only with advice about [Emollient Therapy](/treatments/medical-dermatology/emollient-therapy/). Brush softly; never scrape or pull flakes from the hair. Do not use adult hair-loss products or medicated preparations without guidance. Book an assessment for sudden shedding, a clearly defined bald patch, broken hairs, scalp tenderness, pus, swelling, extensive redness, or a child who seems unwell. Seek advice when hair does not begin to look fuller after the scalp settles, or when scale returns despite gentle care.

Ask whether the hair change is normal shedding, friction, inflammation, or infection; how to remove scale without traction; and whether the scalp needs testing or treatment.
