Coxsackie sore throat

The throat may look red, with tiny blisters or ulcers around the soft palate, tonsils or inside the mouth. A child may also have reduced appetite because swallowing hurts. Coxsackie viruses are usually spread through respiratory droplets, saliva or contact with contaminated hands and surfaces. A sore throat can also occur with a common cold, influenza, COVID-19, tonsillitis, strep throat, glandular fever, allergic rhinitis or acid reflux, so appearance alone cannot confirm the cause.

Offer frequent fluids and soft, cool foods if swallowing is painful. Rest, handwashing and not sharing cups, cutlery or towels help limit spread. Follow age-appropriate advice for pain or fever medicines, and never give a child aspirin unless specifically directed. Antibiotics do not treat a viral infection. Keep the child away from close-contact activities while unwell and follow local school or nursery guidance.

Seek prompt medical advice if the person cannot drink, urinates much less, becomes unusually sleepy, has breathing difficulty, severe headache, neck stiffness, persistent vomiting or worsening illness. A very young child, a child with a long-term condition or an uncertain diagnosis may need earlier assessment.

Ask whether testing is needed, how to manage pain and fluids for the person's age, how long to stay home, and which changes should trigger a review.
