Coughing and red eyes: what should you know?

A virus can inflame the airways and the eye surface, producing cough, sore throat, runny nose, and redness. Conjunctivitis can make the eye gritty, watery, or sticky, and may occur with an infection. Allergic conjunctivitis is more likely to cause itching, watering, and redness in both eyes, often alongside sneezing or a runny nose. Smoke, dust, chlorine, cosmetics, and contact lenses can irritate the eye while also provoking coughing. Redness alone cannot identify the cause, so pain, vision, discharge, and exposure history matter.

Try not to rub the eyes. Rubbing can worsen irritation and transfer germs from the hands to the eye or to another person.

Wash hands frequently and use a clean cool compress over closed eyes. Avoid smoke and other known irritants, and pause contact-lens use while the eyes are red. Cough relief may include fluids, rest, and moist air. Do not share towels, cosmetics, or eye drops, and do not use someone else’s prescription treatment. A pharmacist or clinician can help distinguish allergy from infection and advise on suitable drops.

Get urgent help for severe eye pain, reduced or changed vision, strong light sensitivity, a chemical splash, an eye injury, or swelling that affects eye movement. Seek prompt advice for a painful red eye with contact-lens use, heavy discharge, fever with marked swelling, or symptoms that are getting worse. Breathing difficulty or facial swelling with coughing may signal a serious allergic reaction.
