Cough with phlegm and itchy throat: causes and relief

Allergic rhinitis can present with an itchy throat, nasal drainage, sneezing, and a cough that brings up clear mucus. A common cold can cause throat irritation and phlegm as the airways respond to infection. Dust mites, pets, or other airborne triggers may produce a repeating pattern in particular rooms or seasons. Food allergy can present with mouth or throat itching, but swelling, breathing difficulty, or sudden widespread symptoms require urgent help. Mucus colour does not by itself identify the cause or determine whether antibiotics are needed.

Drink fluids, rest, and avoid smoke, fragrances, and dusty air. Saline nasal spray or rinsing can help clear mucus draining into the throat. A humidifier may help when the air is dry, provided it is cleaned as directed. Honey can soothe cough in people over one year of age. Seek urgent help for throat or tongue swelling, wheezing, trouble breathing, faintness, or rapidly worsening symptoms after food or medicine.
