What should you know about cough, runny nose, rash, and no fever?

A mild Common Cold may occur without fever, while nasal allergy can cause a runny nose and irritation that triggers cough. Allergic Rhinitis, Pet Allergy, or House Dust Mite Allergy may be relevant when the rash or nasal symptoms follow an exposure. Sinusitis can cause drainage and cough, though it does not explain every rash. COVID-19 and Influenza can vary in presentation, and absence of fever does not identify or exclude them. A new rash may also result from contact irritation, a medicine, or another illness, so its appearance and spread are useful clues.

Take a clear photo of the rash and note when it appeared, where it began, whether it itches, and what touched the skin recently. Rest, drink fluids, avoid smoke, and use gentle, fragrance-free skin care. Do not start or stop a prescribed medicine without advice, even if the rash began after treatment. Avoid sharing towels or close contact if an infection is possible, and ask a pharmacist about suitable symptom relief.

Call emergency services for swelling of the lips or tongue, trouble breathing, faintness, blistering skin, or a rash that does not fade when pressed and is accompanied by feeling very unwell. Seek prompt medical review for a rapidly spreading rash, painful skin, eye involvement, severe headache, dehydration, or worsening cough. Children, older adults, and people with weakened immunity may need earlier assessment.

Tell the clinician about new foods, medicines, products, animals, travel, sick contacts, and any change in breathing. Ask whether the rash needs examination, whether testing is useful, and which symptoms should prompt urgent reassessment.
