Cough, itchy throat and runny nose: what it may mean

Allergic rhinitis commonly presents with a runny or blocked nose, throat irritation and cough, especially after exposure to pollen, house dust or animals. A common cold can produce similar symptoms, often alongside tiredness, sneezing or a sore throat. The pattern, duration and triggers help separate them; symptoms that begin after a particular food or come with swelling, hives or breathing difficulty need urgent attention because food allergy can affect the airway.

House dust mite allergy may cause symptoms indoors or during sleep. An itchy throat can also be a symptom worth assessing on its own when it persists or keeps returning.

Drink fluids, rest, and avoid smoke, strong fragrances and other irritants. Saline nasal rinsing or a humidified room may soothe nasal passages; use safe, clean water for any rinse. If symptoms follow a repeatable exposure, reduce that exposure and keep a simple symptom diary. A pharmacist or clinician can discuss allergy medication and whether it fits your age, health conditions and other medicines. Do not start antibiotics simply because a cough is present.

Seek urgent help for trouble breathing, throat or tongue swelling, faintness, blue lips, or rapidly worsening symptoms after eating or taking a medicine. Arrange a medical review for a cough that persists, fever that is significant or returning, chest pain, wheezing, dehydration, or symptoms that are disrupting sleep and daily activities. Children, older adults and people with asthma or weakened immunity may need earlier advice.
