Cough and runny nose without fever

Not having a fever does not identify the cause or rule out a respiratory infection. A common cold may cause mainly nasal symptoms and cough. Allergic rhinitis often brings clear drainage, sneezing, or itchy eyes without fever, while dust-mite or pet exposure can make symptoms recur in a particular setting. Sinus irritation may cause blockage, facial pressure, or a change in smell.

A cough can also continue after the original infection has settled because the airways remain sensitive. Note whether symptoms began after contact with someone unwell, follow a seasonal or household pattern, or worsen with smoke, perfume, or exercise.

Rest as needed, drink regularly, and avoid tobacco smoke, vaping, and strong fragrances. Saline spray can soothe a runny or blocked nose when used as directed. Keep the room free of visible dust and wash bedding regularly if indoor allergy is suspected. A pharmacist can discuss symptom relief, taking account of pregnancy, age, blood pressure, and other medicines.

Book an assessment if symptoms last beyond the expected recovery period, repeatedly return, or affect sleep and daily tasks. Get urgent help for breathlessness, chest pain, fainting, confusion, blue lips, coughing blood, severe dehydration, or rapid worsening. Fever is not required for a symptom pattern to need prompt review.

Ask whether allergy, infection, sinus disease, or an irritated airway best fits the pattern; whether you need testing; and how long to use any recommended medicine. Bring a list of triggers, medicines, allergies, and relevant health conditions.
