What should you know about cosmetic lip fillers?

Most cosmetic lip fillers use hyaluronic acid gel placed at selected points in the lip or nearby border. The aim may be more fullness, improved proportion, softened lines, or correction of asymmetry. Lip anatomy is highly mobile, so a natural result depends on conservative planning and review after initial swelling settles.

Tenderness, redness, swelling, bruising, and temporary firmness can follow injections. Infection, persistent nodules, allergic reactions, or blood-vessel blockage can occur and require medical attention. Tell the clinician about cold sores, prior filler, allergies, dental work, pregnancy or breastfeeding, and medicines that affect bleeding.

Ask to see the sealed product and confirm who will inject it. Arrange treatment when you can follow the clinic's aftercare advice and avoid unnecessary pressure on the lips. Use only products recommended by the treating professional, and do not inject filler bought online or supplied outside a medical setting.

Use simple, gentle care while the lips are swollen. Avoid manipulating the area unless instructed, and wait for the advised period before strenuous exercise, intense heat, or dental work. Contact the clinic if swelling is not following the expected pattern or a firm area persists.

Seek urgent help for severe or escalating pain, pale or blue-grey skin, marked asymmetry with skin changes, pus, fever, or rapidly increasing swelling. Any new visual disturbance, severe headache, weakness, or speech difficulty after filler is an emergency.

Ask what change is realistic, where the gel will be placed, how the lips may look during recovery, whether you have a cold-sore risk plan, and exactly whom to call if pain or colour change develops.
