Treatment for constant sneezing and runny nose

Allergic rhinitis may respond to avoiding the relevant trigger, an antihistamine, or a steroid nasal spray recommended by a clinician or pharmacist. Dust-mite control, pet exposure changes, and careful cleaning may help when those triggers are suspected. A cold usually needs rest, fluids, and symptom relief rather than antibiotics. Influenza or COVID-19 can require different advice, especially for people at higher risk of becoming seriously unwell. Sinusitis may need assessment when facial pain, reduced smell, or persistent thick mucus develops. The same nasal symptom can therefore call for different treatment.

Keep a brief symptom diary and record exposures, timing, fever, facial discomfort, and any medicine taken. Saline spray or a nasal rinse can loosen mucus; use sterile water or water that has been boiled and cooled for rinsing. Keep indoor air comfortable, avoid smoke and strong fragrances, and wash hands when infection is possible. Ask a pharmacist to check the dose, interactions, and suitability of antihistamines or nasal sprays. Follow the label and avoid prolonged use of medicated decongestant sprays because overuse can worsen blockage. Antibiotics do not treat allergy or uncomplicated viral illness.

Book a review if symptoms continue despite appropriate self-care, return frequently, disturb sleep, or make breathing through the nose difficult. Seek urgent care for wheezing, difficulty breathing, facial or tongue swelling, confusion, faintness, inability to keep fluids down, or rapidly worsening symptoms. Severe one-sided facial pain, eye swelling, or a high fever should also be assessed promptly.
