Constant belching and farting: what to know

Short answer
Constant belching and farting often come from swallowed air, digestion, food triggers, or a condition affecting the gut.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Two gas sources
- Swallowed air and gas made during digestion
- Helpful diary
- Food, bloating, stools, pain, and timing
- Urgent sign
- Severe pain with vomiting or obstruction symptoms
Why both may happen
Air can enter at the mouth and leave as belching, while gas formed by gut bacteria leaves as farting. Eating quickly, fizzy drinks, gum, and straws can increase swallowed air. Certain foods may ferment more in the bowel and cause wind. Irritable bowel syndrome can combine bloating and altered bowel habits with excess gas. Acid reflux, gastritis, Helicobacter pylori infection, or a hiatus hernia may explain upper symptoms, but they do not automatically explain every bowel symptom.
Steps that may help
Eat slowly, chew well, and reduce fizzy drinks for a short trial. Keep a diary of meals, belching, farting, bloating, stool changes, and pain; this can reveal a pattern without removing many foods at once. Gentle movement may help gas pass. Seek professional advice before making major dietary restrictions or starting repeated medicines.
When to seek care
Arrange an appointment if the change persists, causes pain, distension, diarrhoea, constipation, or interferes with daily life. Get urgent help for severe pain, persistent vomiting, blood in stools, black stools, fainting, a swollen abdomen with inability to pass stool or gas, or breathing difficulty.
What to ask
Could my symptoms fit irritable bowel syndrome or reflux? Which foods should I test carefully? Would acid reflux medication be appropriate for my upper symptoms?
