Complications of PMR

PMR vaccination can be followed by soreness, redness or swelling where it was given. Fever, feeling tired, reduced appetite, swollen glands or a mild rash may appear as the immune system responds. These effects are generally temporary. A rash after vaccination is not the same as having a contagious infection, but a clinician can assess it if the child is unwell.

A seizure linked with fever is uncommon but needs medical review. Severe allergy is also uncommon and usually begins soon after a dose. A previous serious vaccine reaction, pregnancy, immune suppression or certain medicines should be discussed before vaccination because the schedule may need individual advice.

Encourage fluids, rest and normal light activity as tolerated. A cool cloth can soothe the injection site. Measure temperature when needed and use age-appropriate pain or fever medicine only according to a clinician or label. Do not give aspirin to a child unless specifically prescribed.

Record the dose date and any symptoms, including their timing. Call the vaccination service if a reaction is getting worse, interferes with drinking, or does not begin to settle. The Childhood Immunisation page explains how vaccines fit into routine care.

Get emergency help for breathing difficulty, throat or facial swelling, widespread hives, fainting, collapse or sudden extreme drowsiness. These signs can indicate a severe allergic reaction.

Arrange urgent assessment after a seizure, repeated vomiting, severe headache with neck stiffness, confusion, unusual weakness, or a child who is difficult to wake. A high fever with a very unwell appearance also deserves prompt review. Do not assume every symptom after a dose is caused by the vaccine.

Ask what symptoms are expected after this dose, how to manage fever, which reactions should be reported, and whether a previous allergy or illness changes the next dose. Ask when normal activities and childcare can resume.
