Complications of Placenta Accreta

In placenta accreta, the placenta attaches too deeply to the womb and may not separate normally after the baby is born. Attempts to remove it can cause heavy bleeding. Depending on how far it extends, the placenta may involve the bladder or other nearby tissues, making surgery more complex. Blood transfusion, intensive monitoring, and treatment for anaemia may be needed.

Bleeding can occur during pregnancy, especially when the placenta is low or overlaps the cervix, but some people have no symptoms. Ultrasound assessment and review by a specialist maternity team help plan the safest place and method for birth.

Keep specialist appointments and tell the team about bleeding, pain, or previous uterine surgery. Go to maternity emergency care for any vaginal bleeding, severe abdominal pain, contractions, dizziness, fainting, or reduced fetal movement. Call emergency services if bleeding is heavy, you feel weak or breathless, or you may collapse. Bring your maternity information if it is immediately available, but do not delay leaving to find it.
