What should you know about complications of orbital cellulitis?

Orbital cellulitis affects tissues within the eye socket, unlike a more superficial infection around the eyelid. Swelling and inflammation can restrict eye movement or press on structures needed for sight. Infection may spread from nearby sinuses or other areas, and severe cases can extend toward the brain or bloodstream.

Possible complications include reduced vision, an abscess, blood-clot inflammation in deep veins, meningitis, or sepsis. These complications are reasons for immediate medical treatment; they are not inevitable whenever swelling near an eye occurs.

Go to an emergency department immediately if orbital cellulitis is suspected. Hospital clinicians may examine vision and eye movement, arrange imaging, and give antibiotics through a vein. Do not wait for a routine appointment, squeeze the swelling, or rely on leftover medicine.

Tell the team when symptoms began, whether there was sinus illness, injury, surgery, or a skin infection, and which medicines or allergies apply. A clinician may involve eye, ear-nose-throat, or surgical specialists if an abscess or deeper spread is suspected.

Emergency care is needed for eye pain with movement, reduced or blurred vision, double vision, a bulging eye, severe headache, vomiting, confusion, unusual drowsiness, or rapidly worsening eyelid swelling. Fever may occur but is not required. Spreading Skin Redness, Skin Swelling, or Painful Skin around the eye should never be monitored at home when eye function is changing.

Ask whether the infection is orbital or superficial, whether vision and eye pressure are affected, what imaging shows, and how long hospital treatment may take. Ask which changes after discharge require an immediate return.
