Complications of laryngitis

Inflammation around the voice box can leave the vocal cords swollen and the voice hoarse. Repeated voice strain, smoking or acid reflux can keep irritating this area and prolong symptoms. A sore throat may make swallowing uncomfortable, while severe swelling can narrow the airway. Persistent hoarseness can also need assessment to identify a continuing irritant or another condition; it should not simply be assumed to be a short-lived infection. Most uncomplicated episodes improve with time and sensible voice care.

Rest your voice without whispering, drink fluids and avoid shouting, smoke and dusty air. Treat reflux triggers if they are relevant to you, and do not repeatedly clear your throat because this can add irritation. A GP consultation is sensible when hoarseness is persistent, recurrent or affecting work. Ask before using antibiotics, since many cases are viral or irritation-related and antibiotics do not treat every cause.

Get emergency help for noisy or difficult breathing, blue lips, inability to swallow saliva, rapidly increasing throat swelling or severe breathing distress. Arrange prompt medical review for coughing blood, dehydration, severe pain, a hoarse voice that does not improve, or symptoms that repeatedly return. A common cold can cause laryngitis, but worsening breathing is an airway warning sign rather than a routine cold symptom.

Ask what may be irritating your voice box, whether reflux needs attention, how long voice rest should continue, and which breathing or swallowing changes need urgent care.
