What should you know about complete loss of taste?

Complete loss of taste does not identify one cause without considering other symptoms and the timing of the change.

Continue drinking fluids and choose nourishing foods with textures you can tolerate. Keep food safety in mind because reduced flavour awareness can make spoiled food harder to recognise, especially if smell is also affected. Avoid adding excessive salt or sugar to compensate, and do not stop prescribed medicines without advice. Arrange a review if the change persists, affects eating, follows a head injury, or occurs without an obvious respiratory illness.

Seek urgent help for sudden taste loss with facial weakness, trouble speaking, confusion, severe headache, or vision changes. Get prompt advice if swallowing becomes difficult, dehydration develops, or taste loss follows a significant head injury. Breathing difficulty, severe allergic swelling, or rapidly worsening illness also needs emergency assessment.
