What should you know about cold painful hands and feet?

Short answer
Cold painful hands and feet may follow cold exposure, but persistent pain, colour change or reduced circulation should be assessed.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

- Emergency change
- A suddenly cold, pale or blue painful limb
Possible explanations
Blood vessels normally narrow in cold conditions, reducing heat loss and making fingers or toes feel cold. Pain, numbness or colour changes that return with cold or stress can reflect an exaggerated vessel response. Anaemia or Iron Deficiency Anaemia may accompany tiredness, breathlessness or a fast heartbeat. Hypothyroidism can cause sensitivity to cold, dry skin, constipation and slowed energy. Peripheral Arterial Disease may cause aching with walking, cool skin or slow-healing foot wounds. These conditions can overlap with ordinary cold exposure, so the symptom does not diagnose any one cause.
What you can do
Warm hands and feet gradually with dry layers, gloves and comfortable socks; avoid placing numb skin directly against a hot heater or hot water. Move regularly, avoid smoking, and protect the skin from cracks or pressure. Record triggers, colour changes, numbness, walking-related pain and whether one side is different. Do not start Iron Supplementation simply because your hands or feet feel cold; iron treatment is appropriate when deficiency is confirmed or specifically advised. Arrange a routine review when symptoms persist, recur indoors, limit walking or affect sleep.
When to seek care
Seek urgent care if a hand or foot suddenly becomes very cold, pale or blue, severely painful, numb or weak, particularly on one side. Prompt assessment is also needed for a new wound that does not heal, spreading redness, blackened skin or severe pain at rest. Call for emergency help if these changes occur with chest pain, severe breathlessness or collapse. Sudden loss of circulation is time-sensitive and should not be managed with home warming alone.
Questions for your doctor
Could anaemia, thyroid function or circulation explain this pattern? Should my blood flow, sensation or pulses be checked? What changes in colour or pain should prompt urgent help?
