Short answer

Cold milk may briefly soothe pregnancy heartburn, but it does not treat the reflux and can worsen symptoms for some people.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

Direct answer

Its cool temperature can feel calming, while fat in some milk may slow stomach emptying and encourage reflux. If milk agrees with you, a small amount is reasonable as a drink; it should not replace a meal, prescribed treatment or assessment of persistent pain.

Why heartburn happens in pregnancy

Pregnancy hormones can relax the muscle that normally helps keep stomach contents out of the oesophagus. As the uterus grows, pressure on the stomach can also make acid travel upwards. The result may be burning behind the breastbone, a sour taste, burping or discomfort after food and when lying down.

Milk does not neutralise the underlying tendency to reflux. Personal triggers vary: richer dairy helps some people feel full but aggravates others, and lactose intolerance can add bloating or cramps rather than relieve the original symptom.

Ways to reduce reflux

Try smaller meals, eat slowly and notice whether spicy, fatty or acidic foods trigger burning. Avoid lying flat soon after eating, keep your upper body raised when resting, and choose loose clothing around the waist. Sip fluids between meals if large drinks with food make you uncomfortably full.

If you try cold milk, choose an amount that does not leave you bloated and stop if the burning intensifies. A pharmacist, midwife or doctor can recommend an antacid or acid-reducing medicine that is appropriate during pregnancy after checking your other medicines and health conditions. Do not use baking soda as a home remedy.

When to seek care

Arrange medical advice if heartburn is frequent, worsening, wakes you repeatedly, makes swallowing difficult, or continues despite suitable self-care. Seek urgent help for severe chest pain, trouble breathing, vomiting blood, black stools, fainting or pain that feels different from your usual reflux.

After mid-pregnancy, severe pain beneath the ribs or in the upper abdomen with a strong headache, vision changes, sudden swelling, nausea or feeling very unwell needs urgent maternity assessment. Pre-eclampsia can present with upper abdominal pain and should not be dismissed as indigestion.

Questions for your clinician

Describe where the burning occurs, its relationship to meals and lying down, and any vomiting or swallowing difficulty. Ask which medicines fit your stage of pregnancy, how they should be spaced from prenatal supplements or other tablets, and which symptom changes should prompt contact with your maternity team.

Questions people ask

Is cold milk safe to drink for heartburn during pregnancy?

Milk is generally a food rather than a heartburn medicine. If you tolerate dairy and have not been advised to avoid it, a small serving can be tried, but stop if it increases burning, bloating or nausea.

Is warm milk better than cold milk for reflux?

Temperature mainly changes how soothing the drink feels. The milk’s fat content, the amount consumed and your personal triggers are more relevant to whether reflux improves or worsens.

What can I take if food changes do not control pregnancy heartburn?

Ask a pharmacist, midwife or doctor for a pregnancy-appropriate antacid or acid-reducing medicine. Tell them about prenatal supplements and other medicines so they can advise on choice and timing.
