What should you know about cold feet and fever?

During chills, the body reduces blood flow near the skin and directs warmth toward the core. Feet can therefore feel cold even while the measured body temperature is raised. Fever may accompany respiratory infections such as the common cold, acute bronchitis, COVID-19, bronchiolitis, or croup; other infections can cause fever with local skin redness, swelling, or pain.

Cold feet alone do not identify the cause of a fever. Consider the whole picture: age, duration, breathing, alertness, hydration, rash, cough, pain, and whether one foot is unusually pale, blue, swollen, or painful.

Check temperature with a reliable thermometer, rest, and offer frequent fluids if the person can drink. Use light clothing and a comfortable room temperature rather than heavy wrapping during a fever. Warm cold feet gently with socks; avoid direct high heat. Follow the label or a clinician's advice for fever medicine, and never give a child medicine intended for an adult.

Get urgent help for difficulty breathing, blue or mottled skin, unusual sleepiness, confusion, a seizure, inability to drink, or signs of severe dehydration. Seek prompt assessment when cold feet are accompanied by a rapidly spreading rash, severe pain, marked swelling, or a very unwell appearance. Infants, older adults, pregnant people, and those with significant long-term conditions may need earlier advice.

Ask what temperature pattern and symptoms matter, how to maintain fluids, which fever medicine is suitable, and what changes require emergency help. Mention recent travel, sick contacts, new medicines, rash, cough, urinary symptoms, or a painful skin area.
