Coffee after food poisoning

Short answer
After food poisoning, wait until vomiting and diarrhoea have settled and you can drink normally before trying coffee again.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Wait first
- Until vomiting and diarrhoea have settled
- First choice
- Water or an oral rehydration drink
Why coffee may feel unpleasant
Caffeine and the acidity of coffee may irritate the stomach or bowel while they are recovering. Coffee can also make nausea, abdominal discomfort or loose stools feel worse for some people. The drink itself does not treat the infection, and adding milk or a rich creamer may create a separate problem if your digestion is temporarily sensitive.
During recovery, the key concern is replacing fluid lost through vomiting or diarrhoea. Plain water and an oral rehydration drink can be more useful than coffee. A person who cannot keep fluids down may need medical assessment and, in some cases, IV fluid therapy.
How to reintroduce it
Start with small, frequent sips of water or Oral Rehydration Therapy. Eat simple foods when your appetite returns, and avoid coffee while it clearly worsens nausea, cramps or diarrhoea. Once fluids and food stay down, try a small, weaker coffee after food rather than on an empty stomach. Stop if symptoms return and try again later.
When to get medical help
Seek urgent care if you cannot keep fluids down, feel faint or confused, pass very little urine, or have severe abdominal pain. Prompt medical advice is also appropriate for blood in vomit or stool, a high fever, or diarrhoea that is persistent or worsening. See the food poisoning, vomiting, diarrhoea, fever and abdominal pain guides for symptom-specific information.
Questions for your doctor
Ask whether your ongoing symptoms suggest dehydration, whether an oral rehydration drink is suitable, and when caffeine can fit safely into your usual routine. Mention recent travel, medicines, pregnancy, or a condition that affects your kidneys or digestion.
