Coconut Oil to Treat Cradle Cap: What to Know

Short answer
Coconut oil may soften cradle-cap flakes, but it is not a complete treatment for persistent or inflamed scalp disease.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Main role
- Softens scale for easier washing.
- Medical review
- Needed for inflamed, spreading, or persistent changes.
What treatment can and cannot do
Cradle cap causes scale on an infant's scalp and may also affect the eyebrows or skin behind the ears. Oil can make the scale more flexible so it releases during washing, but it does not guarantee that the underlying inflammation will settle. Leaving a thick layer in place can add buildup and make the scalp harder to clean. A rash that is intensely itchy, raw, wet, or spreading may not be simple cradle cap and needs a closer look.
Use it carefully
If your clinician agrees, smooth a very small amount over the scale, avoid the eyes and broken skin, and allow it to soften briefly. Lift only what comes away easily with a soft brush, then wash thoroughly with a mild baby shampoo. Do not scratch, peel, or use adult scalp treatments. Keep nails short and watch for irritation after the product is removed. Persistent scale may call for a planned emollient routine, while suspected infection may require a clinician-selected topical antifungal treatment.
Warning signs
Contact a clinician if the scalp becomes sore, hot, swollen, cracked, bleeding, oozing, or foul-smelling, or if crusting spreads. Get prompt advice when the infant has fever, seems unusually unsettled, or develops patchy hair loss. Arrange review if gentle washing does not help or if the diagnosis is uncertain; medicated treatment should be chosen for the baby's age and skin.
Questions for your doctor
Is this cradle cap or another scalp rash? Is coconut oil appropriate for this baby's skin? Should we use emollient therapy, and what signs would make a topical antifungal treatment necessary?

Questions people ask
Does coconut oil cure cradle cap?
It may help loosen flakes, but persistent or inflamed scalp disease may need a different treatment.
Can I leave the oil on overnight?
Ask the baby's clinician first; a thick or prolonged layer can leave residue and irritate the scalp.
