What should you know about CO2 laser skin treatment?

The laser creates precisely planned columns or layers of thermal injury. As the area repairs itself, old surface cells shed and fresh skin forms; collagen remodelling may gradually improve texture. A clinician chooses the intensity according to the concern, body site, skin tone and recovery time you can manage. It is a resurfacing treatment, so it is different from a product applied at home or a procedure designed to remove fat.

The treated area commonly feels hot or tight and may become red, swollen, crusted or flaky. Pigment becoming darker or lighter, infection, scarring and prolonged redness are risks that should be discussed before treatment.

During consultation, disclose medicines, allergies, previous laser procedures, cold sores, keloid scars and conditions that slow healing. Protect the area from sun before and after treatment. Use only the cleanser, ointment or moisturiser recommended by the clinic; do not scrub, peel crusts or restart retinoids and acids without advice. Arrange time away from intense heat, dusty environments and strenuous activity while the surface heals.

Call the clinic if discomfort is increasing instead of settling, redness spreads beyond the treated area, drainage becomes cloudy, or you develop fever, severe swelling or clustered blisters. Vision changes after treatment near the eyes require urgent medical assessment. Do not conceal a suspected infection with cosmetics.

Ask what the laser will target, whether fractional or full-field treatment is planned, what improvement is realistic, and how the clinician will protect nearby eyes. Clarify the cleansing routine, expected peeling, follow-up timing and alternatives such as non-laser resurfacing.
