CO2 laser on a surgical scar: what to know

A CO2 laser removes or heats precise layers of scarred skin. The resulting healing response can make a raised, firm or uneven scar feel more flexible and look less sharply outlined. It cannot erase the original operation or restore skin exactly to its previous appearance.

A scar that is still opening, infected, actively inflamed or changing quickly needs assessment before resurfacing. Darker skin tones and a history of post-inflammatory darkening may call for conservative settings and careful pigment planning. The location matters too: scars near joints may need movement advice while they heal.

During consultation, show the full scar and describe previous wound problems, cold sores, keloids, medicines and skin treatments. Ask whether fractional or fully ablative treatment is appropriate, and what improvement is realistic after one or more sessions.

After treatment, follow the wound-care plan closely. Keep the area clean and protected, avoid picking peeling skin, and use the recommended sun protection once the surface allows it. Redness, warmth, swelling, weeping and tenderness can occur during early healing; the treating team should explain what is expected for your settings.

Contact the treating clinic promptly if pain is worsening rather than settling, redness spreads beyond the treated area, discharge develops an unpleasant smell, fever appears, blisters become extensive, or the wound is not closing as advised. Seek urgent care for breathing difficulty, facial swelling or a rapidly spreading allergic reaction.
