CO2 laser for keratosis pilaris: what to know

Keratosis pilaris produces small rough bumps around hair follicles, commonly on the upper arms, thighs, cheeks or buttocks. It reflects a buildup of keratin around the follicle rather than a surface scar alone. CO2 laser resurfaces skin and can cause redness, peeling, pigment changes or prolonged irritation, so the potential benefit must be weighed against those effects. It may be discussed for a carefully selected, persistent texture concern, but it does not remove the underlying tendency permanently.

Use a gentle cleanser and regular moisturiser, avoiding rough scrubbing that can inflame the follicles. A clinician may suggest an emollient, a topical retinoid, or another product that loosens surface keratin; introduce treatments exactly as directed. If bumps are actually ingrown hairs or another rash, the plan changes. Laser hair removal or a chemical peel may be relevant in selected situations, but they are not interchangeable with treatment for every cause of bumps.

Arrange a skin review if the bumps are painful, pus-filled, rapidly spreading, intensely itchy, bleeding or leaving marked scars. Seek prompt care for facial swelling, fever or a rapidly worsening rash. A diagnosis is useful when the appearance differs from your usual keratosis pilaris or does not respond to a reasonable care plan.
