CO2 laser for wrinkles around the mouth: what to know

Lines around the mouth can reflect sun exposure, natural collagen changes, repeated lip movement, smoking or loss of support beneath the skin. CO2 laser treats the surface and may improve fine etched lines and texture. It does not stop lip movement or replace missing volume, so a clinician may discuss whether more than one concern is contributing.

The mouth area moves frequently and is exposed to saliva, food and friction. Redness, swelling, crusting, infection, cold-sore reactivation, pigment change and scarring are possible. Skin colour, previous treatments and healing history help determine whether a fractional, lighter or staged plan is more suitable.

Tell the clinician about cold sores, dental work, eczema, active irritation, medicines and previous pigment changes. Ask whether antiviral protection is appropriate. Plan soft foods and limited social activity if lip movement makes the first healing days uncomfortable, and follow instructions about products before treatment.

Clean the area gently, use the recommended ointment and avoid picking. Keep cosmetics, acids, retinoids and fragranced products away until the surface has healed and the clinician agrees. Protect healed skin from sunlight. Contact sports, swimming and activities that cause heavy sweating may need to wait until the wound is closed.

Call the clinic if pain or swelling is intensifying, redness is spreading, or you see pus-like drainage, fever, clustered blisters or difficulty eating and drinking. Seek urgent care for rapidly worsening facial swelling, trouble breathing, severe eye symptoms or an allergic reaction. Prompt assessment is particularly useful near the lips, where infection and cold sores can resemble irritation.

Ask whether your lines are mainly surface lines, movement lines or related to volume change. Discuss laser depth, cold-sore prevention, expected peeling, mouth-care instructions, sun protection and the point at which another treatment should be considered instead of deeper resurfacing.
