What should you know about CO2 laser engrave metal?

CO2 refers to a carbon dioxide laser, a device that produces infrared energy absorbed strongly by water. In a workshop, that energy may remove or alter a surface layer, but bare metal generally reflects much of the beam and may need a different laser or coating for a clear mark. In an aesthetic clinic, the same laser family is configured for skin, where water in skin cells absorbs the energy. The device can remove controlled surface tissue and heat nearby skin, encouraging a smoother texture as it heals.

Do not assume that a machine advertised for engraving is suitable for a person. Medical treatment requires calibrated settings, eye protection, trained operators, infection control, and assessment of skin type and the area being treated.

Ask the clinic to name the exact procedure and explain whether it is fractional or fully ablative. Share your history of cold sores, unusual scarring, pigment changes, active rash, recent tanning, and medicines that affect healing. Before treatment, follow the clinic’s instructions about sun exposure and skin products. During a consultation, ask what the laser is intended to improve, how the area will be protected, and what aftercare is expected.
