What should you know about cloth diapers for diaper rash?

Diaper rash commonly reflects prolonged contact with moisture, stool, urine, friction, or a product that irritates the skin. Cloth itself is not a treatment. Detergent residue, fabric softener, fragrances, and a damp nappy can keep the area inflamed. A rash with sharply defined edges, small spots beyond the main rash, or skin-fold involvement may need assessment for a yeast infection.

Change the nappy as soon as it is wet or soiled, rinse the skin with lukewarm water, pat dry, and allow short periods without a nappy when practical. Use a plain barrier ointment recommended for infants. Wash cloth nappies with a suitable detergent, rinse well, and follow the fabric-care instructions; stop any product that leaves scent or causes irritation. A clinician may recommend Emollient Therapy or Topical Antifungal Treatment depending on the rash.

Arrange medical advice if the rash is spreading, painful, blistered, crusted, bleeding, associated with fever, or not improving after careful care. Seek prompt assessment for a very young or unwell baby, reduced feeding, unusual sleepiness, or signs of dehydration.
