Short answer

Clostridium botulinum food poisoning is an emergency because its toxin can cause progressive nerve weakness, swallowing difficulty, and breathing problems.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Main danger
Progressive weakness can affect swallowing and breathing.
Urgency
Suspected botulism needs immediate emergency assessment.
Useful detail
Record foods eaten, timing, and other affected people.

How botulism affects the body

The toxin interferes with nerve signals to muscles. Symptoms may include blurred or double vision, drooping eyelids, dry mouth, difficulty speaking or swallowing, and weakness that can spread downward. Nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, or diarrhoea can occur, but fever may be absent.

Illness can follow food that was stored or preserved in unsafe conditions. The food may look or smell normal, so appearance does not reliably show whether it is safe. Several people who ate the same food becoming unwell is important information for clinicians.

What to do now

Treat suspected botulism as urgent: contact emergency services or go to an emergency department immediately, particularly for trouble swallowing, weakness, or any breathing change. Do not wait for symptoms to become severe. Tell clinicians what was eaten, when it was eaten, and whether anyone else is ill.

Do not make yourself vomit or give food and drink to someone who cannot swallow safely. Hospital care may include an antitoxin and close monitoring of breathing, swallowing, and muscle strength. IV fluid therapy or oral rehydration therapy may be used when dehydration is present, according to swallowing safety.

Emergency warning signs

Call emergency services for difficulty breathing, choking, inability to swallow saliva, rapidly worsening weakness, faintness, or new trouble speaking or seeing. Someone with suspected botulism should not drive themselves, especially if weakness or visual symptoms are developing.

Information to share

Tell the medical team about preserved, canned, fermented, or vacuum-packed foods, the timing of symptoms, and every person who may have shared the meal. Ask what warning signs require immediate escalation and how to maintain hydration without risking choking.
