What should you know about clonazepam as a muscle relaxer?

It slows activity in the central nervous system and can cause sleepiness, impaired coordination and dependence. It should be taken only for the reason and at the dose written on the prescription.

People sometimes call clonazepam a muscle relaxer because its calming effect on nerve signalling can reduce certain forms of stiffness, jerking or spasm. That description does not make it interchangeable with medicines specifically prescribed for a back spasm or cramp. The reason for treatment matters because pain, cramping, spasticity and seizure-related movements have different causes and may need different care.

Clonazepam can also intensify the sedating effects of alcohol, opioid pain medicines, sleeping tablets and other medicines that slow the nervous system.

Follow the prescription label and do not take an extra dose for worsening tightness. Avoid alcohol, and check with the prescriber or pharmacist before combining clonazepam with opioid pain relief, sleep aids, sedating antihistamines or other calming medicines. Until you know how it affects you, avoid driving, operating machinery or any activity in which slowed reactions could cause injury.

Do not stop clonazepam suddenly after regular use. The prescriber can make an individual reduction plan because abrupt withdrawal may cause severe symptoms, including seizures. If the medicine is not helping, arrange a medication review rather than changing it yourself.

Get emergency help for slow or difficult breathing, extreme sleepiness, inability to wake, collapse, severe confusion, or swelling of the face or throat. These signs are especially concerning after clonazepam is combined with an opioid, alcohol or another sedative.

Contact the prescriber promptly if you develop troubling unsteadiness, marked mood or behaviour changes, increasing reliance on the medicine, or withdrawal symptoms after a missed dose. New weakness, loss of bladder or bowel control, numbness around the groin, or severe back pain after injury also requires urgent assessment rather than another sedating dose.

Ask which diagnosis clonazepam is intended to treat, how benefit will be judged, which of your other medicines could add sedation, and what the plan is if treatment needs to end. Mention breathing problems, liver disease, pregnancy, falls, alcohol use and any previous difficulty with benzodiazepines before taking it.
