Clinical symptoms of measles

Measles is a contagious viral illness. Early symptoms can resemble a cold or flu, with fever, tiredness, cough, a runny nose and irritated, watery eyes. Small spots may appear inside the mouth before the skin rash. The rash often starts on the face or near the hairline and moves down the body. A child or adult can spread measles before the rash is obvious, so recent exposure and vaccination history matter when a clinician assesses the illness.

If measles is possible, phone a medical service before arriving so staff can reduce contact with other patients. Stay away from school, work and crowded settings until a clinician gives advice. Rest, drink fluids and use fever relief only as directed for the person’s age and health. Do not share towels, cups or utensils. Seek urgent medical help for trouble breathing, severe drowsiness, confusion, a seizure, a stiff neck, inability to drink, or signs of dehydration such as very little urine. Get prompt advice for an infant, pregnancy, a weakened immune system, or a rapidly worsening illness. Fever that persists or a rash with marked weakness also deserves clinical assessment.
