Clindamycin for a skin rash: what to know

A rash can reflect irritation, allergy, heat, inflammation, a fungal infection, mites, or a bacterial problem. Atopic dermatitis and psoriasis are inflammatory conditions; contact dermatitis follows exposure to an irritant or allergen. Get urgent help for a rash with breathing difficulty, swelling of the lips or tongue, faintness, blistering, skin peeling, severe pain, or involvement of the eyes or mouth. Seek prompt assessment for fever, rapidly spreading redness, pus, red streaks, or a rash that follows a new medicine. Children, pregnant people, and anyone with reduced immunity should seek tailored advice sooner when a rash is spreading or unexplained.

Ask what diagnosis is being considered, whether clindamycin is necessary, how long to use it, and which changes mean the plan should be reviewed. Mention all medicines, recent products, allergies, previous antibiotic reactions, and whether anyone close to you has a similar rash or itch.
