Clear watery runny nose: what to know

Allergic rhinitis commonly presents with watery discharge, sneezing, an itchy nose, and watery eyes, especially after a predictable exposure. Dust mites and pets can produce indoor trigger patterns. Cold air, smoke, spicy food, and strong smells may briefly stimulate the nasal lining without an infection. A common cold may bring throat irritation and cough. COVID-19 or influenza can overlap with these symptoms, particularly when fever, body aches, pronounced fatigue, or breathing symptoms occur. Sinusitis is more associated with facial pressure, reduced smell, and persistent congestion.

Move away from obvious irritants, rinse your face after outdoor exposure, and keep tissues nearby without rubbing the skin. Saline spray may wash away particles and soothe the nasal lining. If episodes follow a particular room, animal, or season, keep a brief trigger diary. A pharmacist or clinician can help choose allergy treatment after checking other medicines and health conditions; do not share nasal sprays or use someone else’s prescription.

Seek medical advice when watery discharge is persistent, repeatedly disrupts daily activities, or is accompanied by wheezing, facial pain, fever, or a cough that is getting worse.
