Clear runny nose and sneezing: what to know

Allergic rhinitis commonly presents with repeated sneezing, an itchy nose, watery eyes, and symptoms that return around pollen, dust, or animals. A common cold can begin with clear discharge and later add a sore throat, cough, or feeling unwell. COVID-19 and influenza can also cause respiratory symptoms, but they are more concerning when fever, marked tiredness, body aches, or a new cough appear. Sinusitis is more suggestive when facial pressure, reduced smell, or thick discharge persists rather than improving.

Avoid smoke, strong fragrances, and other triggers; wash your hands and gently blow your nose instead of repeatedly sniffing. Saline nasal spray or a rinse can loosen mucus, provided the product is used exactly as directed and rinse water is safe. Rest and drink fluids if a viral illness seems possible. If symptoms repeatedly follow exposure to dust mites or a pet, discuss allergy-focused treatment with a pharmacist or clinician.

Arrange medical advice if symptoms are persistent, keep returning, disturb sleep, or come with wheezing, facial pain, high fever, or worsening breathlessness. Seek urgent help for severe difficulty breathing, swelling of the lips or tongue, confusion, or a rapidly worsening allergic reaction. A clinician can examine your nose and chest and decide whether testing or targeted treatment is appropriate.
