What should you know about chronic diarrhoea treatment?

Short answer
Chronic diarrhoea treatment depends on the cause and may include rehydration, dietary changes, medicine and care for an underlying digestive or hormonal condition.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- First priority
- Replace fluids and monitor for dehydration
- Cause-based care
- Treatment changes with infection, intolerance or inflammation
- Urgent signs
- Blood, severe pain, fainting or very little urine
Why the cause matters
Persistent loose or watery stools can result from infection, food intolerance, coeliac disease, inflammatory bowel disease, irritable bowel syndrome, medication effects or an overactive thyroid. The pattern matters: note stool frequency and appearance, urgency, pain, bloating, fever, recent travel, sick contacts, new medicines and weight change. A clinician may review hydration, examine your abdomen and request blood or stool tests. Antibiotics are not suitable for every cause, and anti-diarrhoeal medicines may be unsafe with fever or blood in the stool.
Treatment and self-care
Replace fluids regularly, using an oral rehydration solution when a clinician or pharmacist recommends it, especially after repeated stools or vomiting. Eat small, tolerable meals and avoid foods that clearly trigger symptoms; do not begin a strict elimination diet without guidance. Review medicines and supplements with a professional rather than stopping essential treatment yourself. Wash hands carefully and avoid preparing food for others while an infection is possible. Arrange a medical review when diarrhoea persists, keeps returning or affects nutrition, sleep or daily activities.
When urgent care is needed
Seek urgent medical care for blood or black stool, severe abdominal pain, high fever, repeated vomiting, fainting, confusion, very little urine or signs of significant dehydration. Prompt assessment is also needed after recent travel, in pregnancy, for older adults, for young children, or when there is unexplained weight loss or ongoing night-time diarrhoea.
Questions for your doctor
Ask what causes fit your pattern, whether stool or blood tests are needed, which foods or medicines may contribute, what treatment is safe and how to prevent dehydration.

Questions people ask
Can I treat chronic diarrhoea with an anti-diarrhoeal medicine?
Ask a pharmacist or clinician first. These medicines may be unsuitable when diarrhoea includes fever, blood, severe pain or a suspected infection.
Should I avoid all dairy or gluten?
Not automatically. A clinician can help identify a food intolerance or coeliac disease and prevent unnecessary dietary restriction.
