Short answer

Chronic bloodshot eyes can reflect ongoing irritation, dryness, allergy, infection or another eye condition that needs assessment.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Avoid
Rubbing eyes, sharing towels and using unprescribed leftover eye drops.

The short answer

Chronic bloodshot eyes can reflect ongoing irritation, dryness, allergy, infection or another eye condition that needs assessment. Redness happens when small surface blood vessels become more visible, but its appearance alone cannot identify the cause. Pain, vision change and discharge are useful clues.

What persistent redness can mean

Itching and watering often fit Allergic Conjunctivitis, while sticky discharge, swollen lids or redness spreading through one or both eyes can occur with Conjunctivitis. Screen use, contact lenses, smoke, dust and dry air may irritate the eye surface. One eye that stays red, or redness with light sensitivity, pain or blurred vision, needs more careful assessment than mild redness after tiredness.

What to do now

Do not rub your eyes, share towels or use someone else’s eye drops. Wash hands before touching the eye area and pause contact lenses until symptoms have settled and a clinician advises they are safe. Reduce exposure to smoke, dust and strong fragrances; cool compresses may soothe itching. A pharmacist or clinician can guide treatment, particularly if discharge, allergy symptoms or repeated episodes are present.

When to seek care

Book an eye or medical review when redness persists, keeps returning, or has no clear irritant. Seek urgent care for significant eye pain, reduced or distorted vision, strong light sensitivity, injury, chemical exposure, severe headache with nausea, or a red eye in a contact-lens wearer. Rinse chemical exposure with clean running water while arranging urgent help, and do not delay assessment.

Questions to take with you

Could my redness be allergy, infection, dryness or a problem deeper in the eye? Should I stop contact lenses or any current drops? What symptoms would mean I need same-day assessment, and how can I reduce recurrences?

Questions people ask

Are chronic bloodshot eyes always conjunctivitis?

No. Conjunctivitis is one possible cause, but dryness, allergy, surface irritation and other eye conditions can look similar.

Should I keep wearing contact lenses?

Pause contact lenses while the eye is red and obtain professional advice, especially if there is pain, discharge or vision change.
