What should you know about cholera travel vaccine?

Vaccination is one layer of protection against cholera. It does not make untreated water or unsafe food suitable to consume, and it does not remove the need for handwashing. Protection may require a schedule completed before departure, so arrange advice early enough for the clinician to review timing and eligibility. Children, pregnant people, and travellers with medical conditions may need tailored guidance. Vaccine products and travel recommendations can differ by destination.

Ask a travel clinic about the destination, vaccination timing, routine vaccines, and what to carry for diarrhoea. Drink sealed, treated, or otherwise reliably safe water; choose food that is thoroughly cooked and served hot; and wash hands before eating. Pack oral rehydration supplies and know where medical care is available. If watery diarrhoea develops, begin rehydration promptly and seek medical advice rather than relying on the vaccine to prevent complications.

Seek urgent medical care for profuse watery diarrhoea, repeated vomiting, faintness, confusion, very little urine, or severe weakness. These can signal dangerous dehydration. Tell the clinician where you travelled, when symptoms began, what water or food exposures occurred, and whether vaccination was received. IV fluid therapy may be needed when oral fluids are not enough.

Ask whether your itinerary creates a meaningful cholera risk, when vaccination should be given, which side effects need attention, and how your medicines or health conditions affect the plan. Ask what to do if diarrhoea begins abroad and whether a child travelling with you needs separate advice.
