Why treatment is needed
Cholecystitis is inflammation of the gallbladder, commonly caused when a gallstone blocks the outlet. The trapped bile irritates the gallbladder and can allow infection to develop. Pain may be steady rather than brief, with nausea, vomiting or fever. How treatment may proceed
A hospital team may provide fluids, pain relief and medicine to control nausea. Antibiotics may be used when bacterial infection is suspected. Once you are stable, a surgeon may discuss removing the gallbladder, often during the same admission or after inflammation settles. If a stone is stuck in a bile duct, an endoscopic procedure may be considered to clear the duct.
