Chlorpheniramine for a runny nose

Chlorpheniramine is an antihistamine. It blocks the action of histamine, a chemical involved in sneezing and watery nasal discharge. This makes it more relevant when symptoms fit allergic rhinitis, such as repeated sneezing, itchy eyes, or exposure to pollen, dust mites, or pets.

A runny nose can also accompany a common cold, influenza, COVID-19, or sinusitis. Chlorpheniramine does not remove those infections or clear a bacterial sinus problem. A dry mouth, blurred vision, constipation, or sleepiness can occur, especially in older adults.

Follow the product label or a clinician's instructions, and check whether another cold or allergy product already contains an antihistamine. Avoid driving, alcohol, and tasks requiring alertness until you know how it affects you. Ask a pharmacist before use if you have glaucoma, trouble passing urine, significant breathing disease, or take sedating medicines.

Saline nasal spray, reducing exposure to a known trigger, and keeping the bedroom free of visible dust may also help. If symptoms recur, record the trigger, timing, and associated symptoms so a clinician can distinguish allergy from infection.

Seek urgent help for breathing difficulty, swelling of the lips or tongue, faintness, or a rapidly spreading rash. Arrange medical review for a runny nose with severe facial pain, persistent fever, dehydration, or symptoms that are worsening rather than settling.
